Mind Maps 6 — mixed by Yage
Artwork for LP, CD and promo mix CD for part six of the Yage mix albums.
All of the Mind Maps albums have distinct designs but share a common look and feel established on the first Mind Maps. As usual I begin by listening to the music as I explore concepts for the sleeve artwork. I connected with some imagery of transmission equipment and communications towers and began to de/reconstruct them into something new.
Why butterflies?
As a representation of change, butterflies fit the concept behind Mind Maps – the albums are mostly comprised of tracks remixed specifically by Yage for each release. The contrast of small, fragile, and delicate insects being constructed from these massive industrial, man-made giants also appealed to me. The intricate construction of the dishes and towers mimicking the detail in butterfly wings.
As this is the first time a Mind Maps release would be on vinyl, I wanted to make a statement with the artwork so it really stood out. Removing the background satellite imagery and putting the focus on the butterfly. The sleeve is printed on uncoated card stock to match the feel of the CD case.
The CD is housed in an eight panel uncoated card digipak case and features a different butterfly, the background is a satellite image of a volcanic landscape in the Tibesti Mountains of Chad from USGS with the colours inverted.
The butterfly from the LP folds out across the CD case inner panels.
The vinyl centre labels use abstract sections of the satellite dishes on a colour taken from the landscape imagery.
Artwork for the promo CD (in card wallet) of an exclusive mix that was made for the Mind Maps 6 online launch event hosted on Mixlr. I came up with the name (Mind Maps Mix) and then made a triple M graphic using the custom Mind Maps typography. The back cover features some technical information about the mix along with the title in the custom Mind Maps font. The CD was never available to buy and a limited number were made to give to artists and others.
